
Darrel is a seasoned technologist, entrepreneur, and former Director and Chairman of the Merritt & District Chamber of Commerce, known for leading with integrity, vision, and a commitment to excellence. His career began in the 1980s after graduating from DeVry Institute of Technology as a Business Computer Programmer, launching over four decades of expertise in computing, technical solutions, and strategic business managementĀ š¤
From a young age, Darrel was drawn to mechanical things, design and operation. He earned his motorcycle license at 14Ā and flew solo in an airplane at 17, accumulating 35 hours of flight time. Though he never obtained a full pilotās license, he jokes that heās always ready to step in if a commercial pilot ever falls illĀ š¤£
The Y2K era brought challenges to his technology career, prompting a dramatic pivot. In response to industry-wide fear and pressure, Darrel set aside his programming, but not his passion for IT,Ā to pursue another passion and became a licensed Class 1 professional driver in British Columbia. š His instructor described his driving ability as ānatural,ā and he maintained an impeccable compliance and safety record for 12 years. His driving career was ultimately cut short by an industrial chemical accident that impacted his health temporarily.
During his time on the road, Darrel worked part-time with the Teamsters on Vancouverās Hollywood North film sets, though most of his driving career involved hauling super-Bs into remote mine sites. After leaving professional driving, he acquired and operatedĀ a retail bookstore that quickly became a popularĀ tech/gaming shop for a decade in Merritt, adorned with movie memorabilia and deeply rooted in community engagement. DarrelĀ played a key role in organizing Christmas parades, sponsoring local events, and supporting small businesses.
Darrelās legacy in software development continues, his innovationsĀ were ahead of their time in such applications as ABG, VideoNet, OptiX, ChefMaster and uPawn which is still in use by businesses today.

CurrentlyĀ based in Kamloops, Darrel has renewed his commercial class driving license to pursue roles that also connect directly with the community. He is committed to making a lasting impact through innovation, growth, and positive change. Whether developing software, managing accounts, overseeing projects, or mentoring others, Darrel applies a distinctive flair and a practical problemāsolving mindset to every endeavor.
